Turning one is a big deal at our studio and a cake smash session is one of the most fun ways to document it. Sessions at The Flash Lady Photography are fully customized around your child, with handcrafted props, backdrops, and themes built specifically for their session. No two setups look alike.
My work in cake smash photography has been featured on WTNH, and I bring that same level of care and attention to every session I photograph. Cake smash sessions are available for babies and toddlers aged one and up, and yes, the cake is very much part of the experience.
Cake Smash Studio Session Information From Kristin
Sessions are best scheduled around 11 months of age, giving you time to receive your images before the first birthday celebration and capturing baby before they are fully on the move. Before the session, we recommend exposing your child to a frosted cupcake and common allergens including wheat, dairy, and eggs. If there are allergy concerns, an allergy-free cake is always an option.
Bring one to two outfits for your child. Babies at this age tend to have strong feelings about getting changed, so keeping it simple works best. Family photos can be incorporated, but please keep in mind that attention spans at this age run about 45 minutes to an hour. For families who want more time dedicated to group portraits, a separate family session is the better fit.
No two babies react to cake the same way. Some dive straight in, others need a little coaxing. Either way, I have plenty of experience getting great images regardless of how the cake portion goes.
When scheduling your cake smash photography session, it’s best to plan it around 11 months of age, especially if it’s for their first birthday. This allows us to capture their adorable moments before they start walking, and you’ll also have the photos in time for the big celebration. To ensure a successful cake smash, we recommend that your child has been exposed to a frosted cupcake and common allergenic foods like wheat, dairy, and eggs beforehand. If there are any allergy concerns, you can bring an allergy-free cake or we can discuss using a different food that is appropriate for their age.
For the session, you only need to bring an adorable outfit for your child to wear. Please limit it to no more than two outfits as babies at the first birthday age are often not keen on changing clothes and we don’t want to upset them during the appointment. If you’d like to include a family photo, we can certainly accommodate that, but please keep in mind that babies at this stage have a limited attention span of around 45 minutes to an hour. Generally, we focus this session type on just baby. To focus more time on family photos, we recommend scheduling a separate outdoor family photography session.
Our cake smash photoshoots are divided into three parts precisely because babies have different reactions to the cake. Some dive right in and make a glorious mess, while others may be shy or not accustomed to table foods yet. Regardless of their reaction, we have many tricks up our sleeves to create adorable photos that capture their unique personality. So, rest assured, your little one will have a fantastic session and love every part of it!!

Cake Smash First Birthday Photoshoot – How It Works!
Every cake smash session is fully planned around your child’s theme, with custom props and backdrops chosen specifically for their session. I take care of everything on the day, including cleanup, so you can focus on watching your one year old discover cake for the first time.
1. Birthday Portraits
Sessions begin with a series of birthday portraits incorporating play, props, balloons, music, and plenty of silly moments. This is a great opportunity to capture clean images of your child before the cake arrives. Feel free to bring a second outfit for this portion of the session.
2. The Cake Smash
The cake is sourced from a local baker and brought in specifically for your session. I’ll guide your baby through exploring it at their own pace, encouraging them to dig in when they’re ready. Not every baby goes straight for the cake, and that’s perfectly fine. Our main goal is to capture their playfulness, curiosity, and growth during this milestone moment. We will capture great images regardless of how your child reacts!
3. The Baby Tub Bath
The session wraps up with a baby tub bath, which gives us a chance to capture a few more adorable images, especially if the cake smash photos were particularly messy! For babies with sensory sensitivities, we can skip the tub and do a dry experience with rubber duckies and bubbles instead. Either way, you will leave with a clean, happy baby.

3. Simple Cake Smash (Weekdays Only):
For those seeking a simpler yet still professional experience, the Simple Cake Smash is an excellent option. This session is streamlined but still captures the essence of a cake smash celebration. It includes:
- Standard Decor: Choose between a themed balloon garland or our large 3-foot “ONE” letters filled with flowers or balloons, set against a tasteful, simple background.
