As we wrap up another incredible year at The Flash Lady Photography, it’s amazing to look back at how much has happened since opening our brand-new studio space here in Newington, CT. From newborn snuggles to smash-cake giggles to empowering professional portraits, 2025 has been filled with milestones we feel genuinely honored to document.
This year, we welcomed 226 client sessions, and we’re still counting as we close out the holiday season. One of the biggest indicators of growth has been our ability to serve more families than ever before through our controlled studio environment and expanded offerings.

A Big Year for Professional Branding and Headshots
With more businesses investing in modern branding content, we saw a rise in studio and on-location sessions for Connecticut professionals:
- 32 headshot sessions in the studio
- Multiple corporate branding projects on-site
- Headshots created for the Board of Directors at MDC
- Photography services for candidates in the Newington local elections
We also captured four special events, such as birthday parties and a First Communion.

Our holiday season saw a big jump this year with 94 Christmas Mini Session clients (and counting), far surpassing our usual average of 80 families. Being able to leave the setup in the studio after Thanksgiving made that possible.
We also introduced VIP Christmas Sessions for the first time, and 20 families chose this elevated experience that provides extended time, more images, and some extra special features.

How to Prepare For a Studio Cake Smash Photo Session
1. Let Your Baby Get Messy at Home First
One of the best things you can do before your session is introduce your baby to the idea of messy play! Some babies dive right into the cake, while others can be hesitant. A few practice runs at home can help ease the way. Let them touch and explore soft textures like yogurt, mashed banana, or even a mini cupcake. The goal is to help your baby feel confident and comfortable getting messy.
You might even want to stage a tiny “cake smash rehearsal” a week or two before your session. Use a frosted muffin or a small cake, strip baby down to a diaper, and let them explore. Don’t worry if they don’t go all in because just getting familiar with the idea of smashing and tasting will make a difference! You can even do messy play with finger paints, yogurt, or a bowl of whipped cream! Or you can put them in the bathroom with similar texture materials for practice. Feeling on the feet is important, too!

2. Schedule Around Your Baby’s Routine
A well-rested, well-fed baby is more likely to enjoy the session. While we’ll do everything we can to keep the environment relaxed and fun, it really helps to plan the session at a time when your baby is usually happy and alert. For many families, this means a morning time slot before or after their first nap. Try to avoid booking when your baby might be tired, cranky, or overwhelmed. Every baby is different, so consider their temperament and daily routine when choosing a time, but of course, we will work around adjustments to baby’s schedule.

3. Keep Social Interactions in Mind
Some babies are very social and love being the center of attention. Others may feel shy or overstimulated around new people or in unfamiliar settings. Think about how your child responds to new experiences, and feel free to let us know ahead of time if they need a few extra minutes to warm up. And please don’t worry at all, we’ve photographed thousands of babies over the years, nothing will faze us!
To help your baby feel more secure, bring along a favorite lovey or toy. You might also want to include familiar faces in the room, such as both parents, siblings, or perhaps even grandparents, your baby knows well. We always do our best to help little ones feel comfortable and safe from the moment they arrive. It’s also a good idea to introduce strangers in other settings safely, such as the library or community baby programs, so your child is used to other people gradually.

5. What to Bring (and What You Don’t Need)
Since we provide the set, cake, and decorations, your packing list will be short and sweet.
Here are the essentials you should bring with you:
- A clean outfit for your baby to wear before the cake
- A separate outfit for the cake smash (unless we’re providing the wardrobe)
- A bottle or snack for during or after the session
- A towel for the tub bath
- Familiar toys
- Any comfort item your baby might need
We’ll take care of the rest. After the session, we’ll clean up, so you don’t have to worry about any of the mess. You’ll leave with your baby clean, content, and maybe a little tired from all the fun.

6. Remember That Every Baby Is Different
Not every baby will love cake, and that’s okay. Some dive in with both hands, others daintily poke at the frosting, and a few want nothing to do with it. However your baby reacts, we’ll capture adorable images that show off their personality. The most important thing is to enjoy the experience and let your baby lead the way.
If your baby doesn’t seem interested in the cake, don’t stress. We have tricks to help them warm up and ways to create fun moments even if the cake stays mostly intact. It’s also why our sessions have multiple parts to ensure we have different opportunities to win them over. Trust me, no matter what, you will adore these portraits.

Over the past few years, cake smash themes have evolved, offering my clients a variety of creative and unique options. I won’t lie; cake smashes are some of my favorite sessions! There’s something truly magical about capturing the joy and wonder of a child’s first birthday, don’t you think?! We had the delight of celebrating this sweet little boy with an enchanting Pooh-themed cake smash session. The studio was “buzzing” with excitement on the day of his session! His proud big sister joined in on the fun, so we could capture sibling portraits to document this precious moment in time for mom and dad! Finally, it was time for the main event – the Pooh-themed cake smash! The little birthday boy couldn’t contain his excitement as he explored his “Hunny”-themed cake. His adorable expressions and genuine delight painted a picture of pure happiness, creating memories that the family will cherish for years to come. After the cake smash fun, it was time to wash off in the studio tub for some squeaky clean fun. The laughter echoed as water playfully splashed around, capturing the carefree spirit of childhood. This additional element added a delightful touch to the overall session, creating a perfect blend of messy and clean fun. As the session concluded, the family had the delightful task of choosing their favorite digital files, creating a gorgeous photo album, and selecting a framed print to adorn their home.
