How often should you take family photos?
Every year? Every other year? Only when your children are little? When you realize the family portrait hanging in your living room is missing your youngest child?
There isn’t one perfect answer for every family.
But I will tell you this: your family is changing much faster than you think.
When you’re living in the middle of it, between the school drop-offs and sports practices, the bedtime routines, the endless snacks, the laundry, the holidays, the ordinary Tuesday nights, it can feel like life will look this way forever.
And then somehow, it doesn’t.
The baby curls disappear. The little hand that automatically reached for yours doesn’t anymore. Someone loses their two front teeth. Someone else suddenly towers over their sibling. The child who used to climb into your lap has long legs hanging over the side of the couch.
You don’t always notice these changes as they’re happening.
That’s one of the reasons photographs matter so much.

How Often Should CT Families Capture Professional Photos
For families with babies and young children, I often recommend photographing your family about once a year. There is simply so much change packed into those early years.
As your children get older, you may decide that every year still feels right—or that every couple of years is enough.
But I don’t think family photographs need to follow a strict schedule.
Instead, think about the season you’re in.
Has your family changed since the last time you were photographed? Have your children entered a stage you know you’ll want to remember? Has someone joined your family? Is someone getting ready to leave the nest?
Or maybe nothing particularly momentous has happened.
Maybe this is simply what your family looks like right now.
And someday, that will be reason enough to treasure it.

You Don’t Need to Wait for a Milestone
Families tend to be very good at documenting the major milestones.
New babies. First birthdays. Graduations. Anniversaries.
But some of the photographs you’ll treasure most won’t necessarily represent a milestone.
They’ll remind you of how your daughter tucked herself into your side when she laughed. The way your son still had that mischievous little-boy grin. The way your children interacted with each other before they grew up and started lives of their own.
They’ll remind you of you, too.
Because if you’re the person who is usually behind the camera, your children may have thousands of photographs from their childhood, and surprisingly few that show you right there beside them.
You deserve to exist in your family’s visual history.
Not just in the selfies. Not just in the hurried snapshot someone remembered to take on vacation.
In the beautiful, tangible artwork that tells the story of the people you love most.

Family Portraits Aren’t Just for Right Now
When I photograph a family, I’m always thinking beyond the images we’re creating that day.
I’m thinking about where these photographs are going to live.
Maybe it’s a framed portrait you walk past every morning on the way downstairs. Maybe it’s an album your children will pull from the shelf years from now. Maybe it’s a collection of photographs that grows alongside your family, documenting one season after another.
That’s what I love about creating timeless artwork for my clients.
These photographs aren’t meant to disappear into a camera roll.
They’re meant to become part of your home and, eventually, part of your family’s history.
One day, your children may be the ones holding these photographs.
And what feels like everyday life to you right now will be their childhood.

How to Capture Family Photos Without Adding to Your Full Plate
As a mom myself, I know it takes a lot to get a family out the door.
Just the thought of planning family photos can bring up a dozen questions that I answer for clients all the time.
What are we going to wear? Where should we go? What if my children don’t cooperate? What am I supposed to do with the photographs afterward? How am I ever going to find the time to figure all of this out?
That’s exactly why my family portrait experience is full-service.
You don’t have to become the creative director, stylist, location scout, photographer, and artwork designer for your own session. I’m here to guide you through the process.
From planning your session to creating your portraits and deciding how you’d like to enjoy them in your home, you aren’t left with a gallery of digital files and another project to finish “someday.”
And if you’re welcoming a new baby, my Baby’s First Year Plan makes documenting that especially fast-changing season even easier. With three sessions already planned throughout your baby’s first year, you know those important milestones will be captured without having to remember to schedule another session every few months. Families choose between maternity, newborn, sitting up, and first birthday portraits. When you’re already juggling everything that comes with a new baby, that’s one less thing you have to think about, and you’ll come out of that whirlwind of a year with beautiful photographs that show just how much your baby changed.
The goal is to make this experience feel special, and not stressful. Because you already have enough on your plate.
Preserving your family’s story shouldn’t require adding a giant new to-do list to it.
Full Family Session or Mini Session?
We offer two ways to keep your family photographs current: full family portrait sessions and mini sessions. I have an entire article that helps you decide which one is right for you here.
A full family portrait experience gives us the time and space to capture your family without feeling rushed. We can create a greater variety of images, let personalities and connections unfold naturally, and give children time to warm up to me and the camera. This can be especially valuable for families with younger children who may need a little time before they’re ready to smile, play, and show me who they really are. And because the experience is completely customized to your family, we can also create meaningful artwork that fits beautifully into your home.
But you may not need—or want—a full session every single year. That’s why I also offer select mini session experiences throughout the year. These shorter sessions can be a wonderful way to capture a quick update between full sessions, celebrate a particular season, or simply make sure another year doesn’t pass without getting everyone in front of the camera. They’re often a great fit for families whose children are already comfortable being photographed and can jump right into the experience, since we have less time together to warm up.

The Best Time for Family Photos?
There isn’t a deadline for updating your family photos, and there certainly isn’t a rule that says you need to do it every twelve months. But if you find yourself looking at your children and wondering when they got so big, or realizing the portraits on your walls no longer look quite like the family sitting around your dinner table, that’s usually a pretty good sign that it’s time. The beauty of family photography is that it gives you something tangible from a season that otherwise keeps moving forward, whether that’s an album you pull out years from now or a portrait you pass every day in your home.
If it’s been a while since your last family portrait, you don’t need to wait for a milestone or have every detail figured out before you begin. A full family session gives us the time to intentionally document this chapter, while mini sessions offer another way to keep your family photographs current throughout the years. For some families, certain sessions even become an annual tradition. I have families who return for Christmas photos year after year, creating a collection that lets them look back and see just how much their children—and their family—have changed from one holiday season to the next.
You can join my email list to be the first to hear about upcoming session options, or if you’re ready to start planning a full family portrait experience, simply reach out. We’ll take it from there.

Baby’s Milestones: Before the First Birthday
Documenting your baby’s milestones during their first year is one of the most meaningful ways to preserve their earliest memories. From the delicate features of the newborn stage to the first smiles and giggles at 3 months, the ability to sit up and explore the world at 6 months, and the joyful celebration of their first birthday, each milestone tells a beautiful chapter in their story.
These moments pass by in the blink of an eye, and having professional portraits ensures they’re captured in a timeless and tangible way. These photos not only help you remember how tiny they once were but also allow you to celebrate their growth and share these cherished memories with loved ones for generations to come.
Tips for the Session(s):
- Work with the same baby photographer for a cohesive look.
- Book your photographer in advance so you don’t have to worry about finding one last-minute.
- Consider participating in the session so you can actually be IN the photos with your baby.

1 Year: Celebrating Baby’s First Birthday
Your baby’s first year is full of firsts—first smiles, first steps, and an endless stream of adorable moments. A 1-year-old portrait session focuses on the wonder of babyhood, capturing their wide-eyed curiosity, giggles, and emerging personality.
At this age, your child may still be crawling or just learning to walk. We’ll keep the session relaxed and fun, with lots of breaks and a lot of patience. The goal is to capture those natural, sweet moments—whether it’s them playing with their favorite toy or their first taste of cake at a cake smash session!
Tips for the Session:
- Bring along your baby’s favorite toy or blanket to help them feel comfortable.
- Dress them in something soft and simple—this is all about their expressions!
- Be prepared for some spontaneous giggles and wiggles

2 Years: Full of Energy and Personality
At 2 years old, your child’s personality really starts to shine. They may be talking more, running around, and showing you a glimpse of their budding independence. These sessions are all about capturing their energy, their playful spirit, and those adorable moments of curiosity.
What to Expect: Expect a session full of movement! At this age, we’ll likely be chasing after your child, encouraging their natural curiosity. We’ll make sure to capture candid shots as well as posed ones.
Tips for the Session:
- Choose an outfit that allows them to move freely.
- Bring snacks or treats to keep them happy between shots.
- Be ready for silly faces and lots of giggles—these make for the best portraits!

3 Years: The Fun and Feisty Stage
By age 3, your child is becoming more expressive and may have strong opinions about their outfit or what they want to do during the session! It’s a fun stage full of imaginative play, dramatic expressions, and a lot of personality.
What to Expect: Your 3-year-old will likely have their own ideas for how the session should go, so we’ll take a relaxed approach and allow them to be themselves. I’ll work with your child to make them feel comfortable, whether that means talking about their favorite activities or letting them run around for a bit before getting into the posed shots.
Tips for the Session:
- Let your child pick out their outfit, but make sure it’s comfortable for all the running around they’ll do!
- Incorporate props like a favorite book, toy, or a fun activity to keep them engaged.
- Have some fun ideas ready, like jumping, twirling, or playing with bubbles, to make the session enjoyable for your little one.

4-5 Years: Growing Confidence
By this stage, your child is likely growing more confident and excited to be in front of the camera. The session can include more posed moments, but there will still be plenty of playfulness and creativity. These sessions are wonderful for capturing your child’s growing individuality.
What to Expect: Expect a mix of candid and posed shots as your child feels more comfortable posing for photos. There may still be moments of shyness or goofiness, but that’s all part of their charm.
Tips for the Session:
- Keep the session light-hearted by encouraging your child to show off their favorite silly faces or dance moves.
- Consider a special family outfit or theme to reflect their growing interests and sense of style.
- Let them choose a special activity (like blowing bubbles or playing outside) to make the session feel like fun instead of work.

6+ Years: The School Years
As your child reaches 6 years old and beyond, they are officially in the school years. Watching your child blossom and beyond who they are meant to be is such a special gift.
These sessions allow for more formal portraits, as well as the chance to capture your child’s emerging interests, hobbies, and unique personality.
What to Expect: At this age, we’ll likely get a mix of posed and candid moments, with your child starting to develop their sense of style and self-awareness. Whether they’re into sports, books, or anything in between, we can tailor the session to reflect what makes them unique.
Tips for the Session:
- Incorporate their hobbies or favorite activities into the session.
- Encourage them to express themselves with fun, quirky poses or facial expressions.
- Let them feel involved in the planning—ask them about what they want to wear or bring to the session.

Which Baby Photoshoots Are Important During Your Baby’s First Year
They say when a child is born, a parent is born, and this couldn’t be truer! Everything is new, and the journey you are walking on is together. There’s something so beautiful about that first year. If there’s one thing that people will tell you over and over, it’s that that the first year goes by so fast! The first smile, the first step, the first birthday – these are moments that pass in the blink of an eye. It’s really unfair how fast it goes by. The good news is, that by documenting each of your baby’s biggest milestones, you’ll have a way to revisit this wonderful time. That’s why it’s essential to capture these precious memories so you can cherish them forever.
Below, I’ll share the top five must-have baby photoshoots during your baby’s first year.
Wish there was an easier way to stay on top of these milestones? That’s where the Lifetime Plan comes in. I’ll share more about that, too!
5 Must-have Baby Photoshoots During Your Baby’s First Year
1. Maternity Photos
The journey of parenthood begins during the pregnancy with a maternity session. This photoshoot captures the radiant glow of an expectant mother, the love between partners and older children, and the anticipation of your baby’s arrival. Maternity photos mark the beginning of your family’s story and are the first step in documenting your baby’s life.

2. Newborn Photos
After your baby’s arrival, it’s time for the newborn session. This photoshoot captures those sweet, tender moments when your baby is just 1-2 weeks old, including all of those little details that will change so quickly. Newborn portraits freeze time and preserve the tiny features, delicate expressions, and the immense love that fills your home. These photos are the foundation of your baby’s story and are an important piece of the Lifetime Plan.

- Three Month Photos
Newborn photos are taken within two weeks of birth (most often) and up to six weeks old; however, sometimes clients need to wait to take their baby’s photos for a number of reasons. If you miss the newborn window, there is another option that’s just as adorable! The three month baby sessions are perfect for documenting their precious babyhood with images of tummy time, back shots, and the beginnings of expressions while still in that newer baby stage.

4. Six Month Sitter Photos
Your sweet newborn is now an adorably chubby and expressive baby! The baby phase goes by way too fast, and this session allows us to hit the pause button and document each kissable cheek, wrist roll, and smile. We’ll meet baby right where they’re at developmentally, but many clients like to wait until baby is sitting up independently between six and seven months. Parents help me get some of the best expressions that will create treasured images. You’ll look back on these and instantly be transported to baby snuggles and coos.

5. The 1st Birthday Cake Smash Photos
The grand finale of the Lifetime Plan is the 1st birthday cake smash session. Your baby’s first year has been a whirlwind of growth and changes, and their first birthday is a celebration of that special journey together. The cake smash session allows your little one, who is more independent and curious, to dive into a delicious cake, creating adorable and messy photos that symbolize their transition from baby to toddler. We love customizing our Newington families cake smash sessions to be exactly what they want. You can choose from a list of themes and options, or tell me your dreams!

2nd Birthday Photos | Hartford, CT
It seems like just yesterday that this little one was here for her Newborn & Milestone photos at 6 months old. We were so excited for her to complete her Annual Review Plan at my Newington, CT photography studio when suddenly…COVID hit AND Mom got a new job out west! So we weren’t going to be able to get her first birthday cake smash in and it was some time with travel restrictions before they could come back out this way. But it was time! And Mom contacted me to see if we could do some 2nd birthday photos instead! I was so excited that they were going to be coming back to Connecticut for a visit and wanted to make everything perfect for this next milestone! I can’t believe she is already 2 years old! We planned for some balloon fun, portraits, and a cake smash anyway because…who says you can only have cake at your first birthday photoshoot?! Balloons were a BIG hit – so much so, that when it was time for cake we really weren’t that interested! Even though it was beautiful and yummy from Betty’s Cake Creations. So you know what, we did something else! We pretended to sort ducks in our little bath tub and brought those balloons out again. With her adorable outfits and my backgrounds, we put together an adorable collections of photos for Mom to add to her collection. Check out some of her favorites below!

Landscape Nursery Family Photos | Cromwell, CT
Oh how we have loved watching this little one grow up the last 2 years! From before she was even born and in her Mommy’s tummy, we’ve been documenting all of the important milestones along the way. And as Mom has put it, “You just get addicted to professional photos!”. I’m so glad that they have trusted me with these moments. For her 2nd birthday, we decided on landscape nursery family photos that would mainly highlight the little Miss turning 2, but also incorporate some family photos, photos with each parent, and even had Grandma & Grandpa tag along too! Family sessions can be a great way to get the whole family involved, and with COVID-19 forcing many of us away from our parents/grandparents, this is a great time to reconnect. Now with little Miss being a bit on the shy side (and we know this!), finding a location that would keep her occupied enough to sneak in adorable photos was crucial. This is something that I talk about with clients a lot as I’m qualifying them for their session. It doesn’t just have to be at a location that might look pretty, but for many toddlers, having something to DO is just as important! Luckily, Grandpa was familiar with the landscape nursery in Cromwell and after asking permission from the owners, they allowed us to come shortly before opening time to walk around (carefully) and photograph their family! What an adorable facility! They primarily serve landscape contractors but happen to have a nursery on site as well. This was perfect for us as it was not crowded as a typical floral nursery would be, and being landscape contractors there were some great little spots mixed amongst their hardscapes and flowers to find. And as a professional photographer, it was my job to find them on the fly! We explored a number of great areas before it was time to walk around the nursery. Little Miss had a great time finding different colored flowers to point out to her parents and grandparents. We had some very sweet grandparent moments they the just loved when they saw the photos later! After many wagon ride requests from Grandpa and individual photos with Mom & Dad (and who could forget watching the ducks and frogs!), we had plenty of photos to choose from. Mom & Grandma were so happy going through the gallery virtually with me. Although it was a difficult choice, I helped them put together a story that was perfect to tell about this 2nd birthday milestone. I hope you enjoy some of the many favorites from their session! And don’t forget – a location can be perfect for any family as long as it’s something that works for your little ones! Contact us about your child’s next milestone!

2nd Birthday Milestone Photos | Newington, CT
This family had initially contacted me to plan for their second baby to arrive in April, and we decided on an Annual Review Plan to make sure that all of her important milestones in her first year were covered! They had not done professional photos with their older daughter and realize how important and valuable these memories are for the future! To be fair, we decided to book some special 2nd birthday milestone photos for big sister to make sure that she had her own day too! This made me so happy to plan something just for her! After planning outfits and backgrounds, I came up with a fun and simple plan for these milestone portraits. Some other ideas for this age are a paint smash or a more parent-guided confetti and balloon session! Both creative and fun ideas to keep your toddlers entertained and do something developmentally appropriate! But simple is good too and very classic to enjoy with your other family portraits. As we’ve seen with a lot of our toddlers, they need a little bit of additional time to warm up to us. Let’s face it! Things are still a bit strange for them entering new environments with a stranger with a mask on! Now this little miss was ready to talk to me and tell me all about her special doggies. We played with a lot of different props in our simple white set up before changing and heading over to where she REALLY wanted to go to – my second background area with balloons! You can’t go wrong with balloons – it’s her birthday after all! But it’s always so much fun for these kids and really brings out their smiles and personality. We had such a fun morning and Mom loved the photos! I can’t wait to see this group back when baby sister arrives and we have more to plan! Stay tuned!
