Outdoor Studio Paint Smash | Plantsville, CT
How quickly two years flew by for one of my little clients! It seems like just yesterday she was born, and last year came back to see me for her unicorn cake smash, and now she’s all grown up and 2 years old! Now her original birthday photoshoot at my Newington, CT studio was supposed to happen back in April, but because of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve had to stay closed to photography indoors. And with things pushing later and later into June for reopening, we wanted to still try to make sure to reschedule all of our appointments in a timely manner. So, we decided to build an outdoor stage at our location in order to still have the same studio-style look, while also staying within the current state guidelines and being as safe as possible for our clients and for ourselves. It took some additional work and time, but in the end we had a fun time! She was ready to get to work as soon as she saw the paint and materials! Each kiddo starts out with some “clean” portraits (if we can manage them!) and then we move on to painting a keepsake canvas to take home, and finally the mess can begin! The great thing about our paint smash sessions is that each one is completely unique to how that child decides to paint and create! I love to see how different the colors schemes end up coming out and even Mom & Dad participate sometimes too! She was sufficiently messy by the time we were done with her outdoor studio paint smash, and then it was time for a bath to clean it all off and head home! They decided on one of our newest products, our Favorites Box, for some updated beautiful mats and prints of some of their favorite photos and matching keepsake digital files! It’s going to be a popular way to commemorate milestones and switch out new photos to frames too! How is it possible that one of my sets of twins is already two?! And we’re planning their twin paint smash to celebrate?! It seems like just yesterday they were here for a fun first birthday cake smash. I tell you, you blink and another year has gone by! I was happy to talk to their Mom about how we could do something unique and fun to celebrate age 2. My paint smash sessions are really unique here at The Flash Lady Photography. No one else gets THIS MESSY in order to give you fun with your kids and have their true personalities shine through. Kids don’t want to just sit and pose – they want to do something that is connected with their age and enjoy it. And that’s getting messy! We usually start out with some clean portraits first. While brother needed some time to warm up, we took some adorable photos of sister and eventually the whole family joined in! When it was time to paint, both of them were SO EXCITED! I love to have the kids paint a little canvas first that they can take home too! After that, it’s time to paint the back paper wall, the floor paper, each other, etc! They had a great time getting messy and painting with different colors. They each had their own favorites which was so funny! After painting was done, it was bath time, to clean up and have more fun too! Blowing bubbles, playing with the rubber duckies, it was all done for them to have a variety of photos. I can’t wait to see which ones Mom & Dad choose! It’s going to be tough – these types of sessions usually have a LOT of photos to pick from! It’s why our albums and Legacy Box are so popular to get the most volume of images. I am so glad they decided to come back and see me for another milestone, and I can wait to watch them continue to grow up!

Outdoor Family Paint Smash | West Hartford, CT
Last month we were so excited to take part in an extension of one of our unique offerings – the paint smash! This is something that is really unique to my studio in that I like to go all out! What’s the point of getting messy if you’re not going to get REALLY messy, and then you’ll see those smiles and laughs from your kids? My regular paints smash photo sessions are done in the studio for ages 2+. It’s a great way for toddlers to do something they like doing anyway (making a mess!) and enjoy themselves while I photograph them. Parents can even join in if they’d like, but most of the session is about their child. I’ve always wanted to experiment with an outdoor family paint smash and I found a family that was willing to try it out! This group was up for trying an outdoor family paint smash here at my Newington studio (in my backyard!). We had plenty of paint, brushes, sponges, and most of all…KIDS! This family has plenty of love to go around with 5 children. And they all were up for getting as messy as possible! They were more than happy to chase each other around, smear paint on mom and dad, and even help their baby brother join in on the fun. I love how the many colors blended together with the greenery of the outdoors, and for once someone was telling them they could get messy. Afterwards they had a fun time spraying the hose at each other to wash the paint off! Enjoy some of the (many) adorable photos!

2nd Birthday Paint Smash | Rocky Hill, CT
This photo session was so much fun to do in between all of our Santa and Christmas family sessions this holiday season! Lulu is one of our regular clients who visited for her 2nd birthday paint smash this year! Last year, she wasn’t a huge fan of eating cake during her 1st birthday cake smash, but this year making a MESS was much more fun for her! One of the things I love about these paint smash sessions is they really allow toddlers and children to do something they love to do by getting messy! These sessions can be challenging however as even washable paint can be tough to contain in a photography studio! Still, I welcome the risk for these smilies! Another great thing is the mom and dad can participate if they’d like to! 2 year olds usually need a little more help at first, so it was great to have their help to show Lulu what to do. And I love their matching Peppa Pig shirts! Lulu put her feet in the paint right away which was awesome! Eventually, she realized that mom and dad could slide her through the paint mess she had made and OH WHAT FUN that was!!! You can see by a lot of the laughing photos towards the end that that’s what we were doing! And why not?! Check out the fun we had below! Family Paint Smash | Newington, CT
After my most recent family paint smash photo session with Liam, I’ve decided these are one my favorites sessions to do already! There is so much uniqueness about combining painting and photography, and so far ALL my kids have loved them (parents too!)! After age 1, trying to take photos of children can be hit or miss no matter how good of a photographer you are. These sessions allow for more of a natural setting without the stress of posing (although I do try to have them look at me every once in awhile!). Parents have had a lot of fun participating too – when’s the last time you’ve had photos done with your children, worn whatever you’ve wanted AND had fun without bribing them to look at the camera?! Liam was VERY determined with his painting, and noises, props, and tickle threats did little to deter his concentration. But you know what? He had fun, his parents had fun, and we took some pretty amazing pictures! So many good ones in fact, that it was very difficult to edit them down to a reasonable gallery size! Birthday Paint Smash | Newington, CT
This post is special to me because it’s about my own pride and joy! My daughter turns the big 3 at the end of March and last weekend we took some time for her own birthday paint smash! These sessions have been extremely popular ever since launching the pilot session last month. They are perfect for age 2 and up and really there is no limit to what age child or family could participate! Most toddlers need something to do after the 2 year stage, and few will sit and pose naturally. In the winter and early spring months, it’s also nice to be able to give those birthday kids a chance at a a really fun photo session! My daughter was SO excited and as I’m sure you will be able to see by her photos below, she enjoyed the paint smash immensely! We used colors that match her room and that went well with using a pink background. The Oshgosh polkdot overalls just made it even cuter and if you think choosing photos for client galleries is difficult, you can imagine that I had a tough time picking final images for my own child’s! As a reminder, birthday paint smash sessions include paints and brushes, a 11×14 canvas for them to paint and take home as a keepsake, parent inclusion if desired, and rustic tub bath photos at the end (cleans up quicker too!).
