As a Connecticut family and newborn photographer, I talk to so many parents who tell me the same things before booking a session:
“We’re so busy right now.”

And honestly? I completely understand. As a mom myself, I know how quickly life moves and how easy it is to push photos further down the priority list.

One of the biggest worries parents have before family photos is whether their kids will behave.
Please hear me when I say: your children do not need to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera the entire time.
Some of the most meaningful family photos happen in the in-between moments. Snuggling your little ones. Laughing together. Holding hands. Letting your kids be themselves.
My goal during a session is never perfection. It’s capturing your family as you are right now.

As we wrap up another incredible year at The Flash Lady Photography, it’s amazing to look back at how much has happened since opening our brand-new studio space here in Newington, CT. From newborn snuggles to smash-cake giggles to empowering professional portraits, 2025 has been filled with milestones we feel genuinely honored to document.
This year, we welcomed 226 client sessions, and we’re still counting as we close out the holiday season. One of the biggest indicators of growth has been our ability to serve more families than ever before through our controlled studio environment and expanded offerings.

A Big Year for Professional Branding and Headshots
With more businesses investing in modern branding content, we saw a rise in studio and on-location sessions for Connecticut professionals:
- 32 headshot sessions in the studio
- Multiple corporate branding projects on-site
- Headshots created for the Board of Directors at MDC
- Photography services for candidates in the Newington local elections
We also captured four special events, such as birthday parties and a First Communion.

Our holiday season saw a big jump this year with 94 Christmas Mini Session clients (and counting), far surpassing our usual average of 80 families. Being able to leave the setup in the studio after Thanksgiving made that possible.
We also introduced VIP Christmas Sessions for the first time, and 20 families chose this elevated experience that provides extended time, more images, and some extra special features.

Flexible Scheduling – Full sessions can be scheduled on a day and time that works best for your family. This flexibility is ideal for busy families or those with young children who may need a particular time of day to be at their happiest.
More Variety – With a longer session, there’s more time for outfit changes, different poses, and multiple backdrops. This variety allows for a wider range of images to choose from when creating albums, wall art, or gifts.

What is a Mini Session?
Mini sessions are shorter, more limited photo sessions designed for simplicity and efficiency. At The Flash Lady Photography, our mini sessions are offered at specific times of the year, with our Christmas Mini Sessions in November being the most popular!
Here’s why families love mini sessions:
Quick & Efficient – Lasting around 15–20 minutes, mini sessions are perfect for families who need a photo session that is quick and to the point! I typically don’t recommend a mini session for kids who are not used to photoshoots, are young and need more time to warm up, or have special needs.
Set Dates & Times – Minis are scheduled on predetermined dates with set time slots, making it easy to plan in advance. While there’s less flexibility, this also means everything is organized and ready for you.
Themed Backdrops – Many mini sessions are designed around fun themes or seasonal setups. Our Christmas Minis, for example, feature beautifully crafted sets that capture the magic of the holiday season, perfect for holiday cards and gifts.
Petite Pricing Option – Mini sessions are a good way to update your family photos, especially if you’re looking for just a few great images rather than a full gallery. Typically, mini sessions include a smaller set of images vs a full session, which is reflected in the price!
While minis are shorter, they’re still designed to give you a wonderful experience and beautiful images you’ll love.

Let’s be honest: the hardest part of planning family photos for many families isn’t finding the right photographer or picking a date…. It’s figuring out what everyone should wear! I’ve even had clients hesitate to book a session because they dread coordinating everyone’s outfits.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone! At The Flash Lady Photography, many of our clients tell us that coordinating outfits is the most stressful part of the process. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be. In fact, with a little guidance and a few simple tips, planning outfits can be one of the easiest (and even fun!) parts of getting ready for your session. Looking for family photo location ideas? Start with Mom’s Outfit
It’s always easier to break down a project into smaller steps. This is no different! I recommend starting with mom’s outfit first and then pulling together everyone else’s outfits. It doesn’t have to be Mom; just choose one family member to start. It’s much easier to decide the rest of the outfits if you have one chosen as the foundation of the look! Also, as moms, we tend to put ourselves last! This is the time to put yourself first! Choose an outfit that you love and feel confident in so that you can rock your session!

Choose 2–3 Main Colors to Build Your Look
The number one secret to effortless family photos? Start by picking 2–3 main colors and building everyone’s outfits around that palette. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to wear the exact same thing. In fact, strict matching can make your photos look stiff or outdated. Instead, think of your family’s outfits as a coordinated mix, not a uniform.
A great example: In one of our recent cherry blossom sessions, mom wore a vibrant floral dress that served as the anchor for the whole family’s look. The rest of the family wore soft neutrals pulled straight from the tones in her dress, creating a cohesive, polished look that photographed beautifully.

Add One Pattern or Texture for Interest
Once you’ve selected your colors, choose one person to wear a subtle pattern such as florals, plaid, or even a textured fabric. This creates visual interest and helps tie the whole group together. If patterns aren’t your thing, don’t worry! A mix of textures (think linen, gauze, or soft cotton) can add that same depth without competing for attention.

The Best Tip is to Try Everyone On Before Your Session
Finally, my BEST tip when it comes to choosing outfits is to have everyone try on their clothes in advance. Not the day of the session, not right before we start, but days in advance. Why? This allows you time to ensure everything fits, is clean, and that you have everything. Save yourself from a frantic Target run the morning of your session. Knowing your outfits are good to go, you’ll feel even more relaxed and excited about your photography session.
